Electrical safety hazards are threats that can be a matter of life or death if ignored. Take note of the top 3 electrical hazards found in homes today. If you have problems, call Shockley Electric today.

Do You Have Old Wiring?

If you have a home that is older than 20 years, you might have want to consider an electrical inspection. Wiring over twenty years old was not meant to support the increased electrical demands of today. Computers, HDTVs, cell phone chargers, microwaves and video games all are a drain on circuitry that wasn’t designed to support it.

Along with capacity constraints, your older wiring may be deteriorating. Old wiring with rubberized coating can dry out and crumble with time. Chewed wires from rodent infestations in previous years may also leave you at risk. Exposed wires increase the potential of fire hazards.

Do You Have Frayed Cords?

Frayed cords are a major source of fires and electrocution in the home. Cords and wiring are part of older appliances and these, too, can wear. Inspect cords and internal wiring, if possible. Replace appliances with newer energy efficient models when wear occurs.

Never run cords under rugs or carpets. Constant rubbing of carpet backing can cause the coating to wear and the wire to be exposed. Check your home today for this potential hazard.

And Don’t Forget – Electricity and Water Don’t Mix

As we discussed in a previous post, current building codes require the use of GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets to be used around any type of water. GFCI shuts down the current when it identifies a problem with the circuit, thus shielding anyone who is in contact with the switch or device.

  • Never touch a plug or switch with wet hands.
  • Never operate any electrical device around water.
  • Never have an electrical device where it may fall into water, such as a bathtub.
  • Do not run extension cords through water, such as puddles or damp ground.
