With Christmas nearly here, it’s important to remember a few quick tips that can make your holiday season fun, exciting and safe. And while the season involves decorating your homes with beautiful ornaments, it’s wise not to forget about holiday electrical safety. There are some dangers that electrical decorations can cause.

Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

Use the Proper Light Bulbs for Indoors and Outdoors

Always be aware that there are specific lights for indoor and outdoor use; make sure to use them in there proper places. Also, make use of LED light bulbs. LED lights are energy-efficient and have cooler temperatures compared to regular bulbs.

Keep Extension Cords Out of the Way

Make sure all extension cords, wires, switches, etc, are not a hazard in walkways, or under carpets or rugs. This can be dangerous as you can trip over the cords and get hurt. Plus, any traffic on the cords can cause wires to break, creating the potential for fire hazards. Disconnect all cords from the wall sockets when you are out of the home or go to sleep at night.

Don’t Overload Extension Cords

An excessive number of switches on one extension cord can cause electric overload. This overload can cause a short circuit due to overheating, and can sometimes even set fire to connected electrical appliances, decorations, etc. Follow proper holiday electrical safety procedures and use multiple extension cords when necessary versus overloading one.

Follow the Directions and Read Safety Manuals

For electric decorations such as lights, bulbs, and inflatables, make sure to follow the instruction guides or manuals. Always read warnings and guides to make sure your decorations are properly set-up for the holiday season.
